CORRESPONDENCE.
The Currency Question
TO THB IDITOA,
Sir, — Your correspondent, '"xitis Super que," whose articles dealing with the currency question are now appearing in your journal, ] asses rather lightly over that period of French and English history when the assignats saved France. H emakes the assertion that William Pitt was a weak British rtatesman. This sec ins to me to be a bit strong and in the face of the fact that history has placed William Pitt, as the foremost man of his day. Therefore I think your ':orr»spondent should explain himself a little. Again, he says William Pitt caused to be f.iected 17 factories for the purpose of forgery. We find nothing of this in ordinary English history. Will your ."•rrespondfiit kindly tell us on what authority 'io makes this statement? Why I ask these questions is that William Pitt (Earl of Chatham) when spoken of is always referred to as a great Englishman, and if what your correspondent says is true then William Pitt was a coward, for he dealt one of the most cowardly blows one states.-nan could deal another, and at the same time used the money of the Br : t ish people to strike a cowardly blow at a struggling nation, for the nation of France was by means of the confidence of her people, in her paper currency trying to shake off the chains that were bowing her head to the dust, a debased Royalty.— l am, etc., J J ONE LOOKING FOR THE LIGHT.
