Second (Schools Competitions) Day.

To-day the exhibits weer increased by the entries from the schools, but in point of numbers these were most disappointing, being hardly half of the totals at the previous shows. There was an entire absence of vegetables from the exhibits, while the entries were confined mostly to decorative exhibits and writing. That interest in the garden competitions should have so soon been lost is a great pity, for past experience has proved that the products of the school gardens were equal to much that came from the gardens of experienced amateurs. Competition in flowers to-day practically lay between the Turakina and Queen's Park schools, from which some lovely exhibits were forwarded. Special praise is due to Miss McDonnell and the children, of the Turakina School, the flowers from which were some of the finest in the show, the quality being very good, evidencing careful attention, while the species were numerous! The bouquets and decorated baskets from this school were exquisite, though the former could have been arranged better, the Queen's Park School entries being superior in this respect ..onjjr^ _In_tbe native flora classes eight' basxets v and four bouquets, forwarded from Turakina, were the only entries, but they made a capital display. The buttonholes and ladies' sprays were beautifully arranged, and in these the Turakina School and the District High School were most prominent, the former's being especially meritorious. The Turakina school won the Challenge Banner, which was previously won outrigrht by the Q.P. School, and handed back by them for competition, will now be hung for a time in the Turakina School. The Queen's Park School recovered the challenge shield won last time by the Mopstown School. To-night the show will be open till 10, and it will well repay inspection. A special word is due to Mr Roy Walker, who, in the absence of the Secretary, carried out secretarial duties as well as circumstances permitted.
