The Gas Works.

TO THI EDITOR

Sir, — Please allow me to inform "Curious" that my reply to Mr Mackay's last letter will be forthcoming — in due couree. As for his innendo that my previous letters were intended to prejudice Mr Mackay's chances at the recent political election let me remind him that I previously emphatically stated they had no political significance and as soon ac this aspect of aff aii*s was suggested I at once dropped the correspondence, stating, at the time, that it would remain in abeyance till the election was over. Did this look like an attempt to damage Mr Mackay's political chances? I have had one object in view only and that object has been to present the gas works finances in their real and true aspect, and to show how financially weak the position really is, and how Mr Mackay and the members of the Borough Council are trying to bolster it up. Sooner or later we muet come face to face with the real facts and if tne ratepayers have any interest in their own affairs then I would suggest to them that they appoint an independent commission of say three of the best business men in town to go carefully into the whole question and present an impartial report aa to the true position. It would thus be seen whether I am right or Mr Mackay. If Mr Mackay gains the day so much the better for the Borough, but the course f • su i£ Cftt is to say the least prudent, if Curious" will have patience for a day or two days at most he will get my reply to the Mayor's last letter, and after he I:as carefully read it if he will do me the justice of saying whether my points are proved or not I will be obliged, and if you, Mr Editor, do not get too tired of this correspondence, I will endeavour to answer "Curious" should he raise any arguments as well as Mr Mackay.— l am, etc., J ' STEADY.
