Death of a Prominent Native Chief
PALMERSTON N., November 19.
The death is announced of Keroi Tc Panau, a notable chief of the Rangitane and Rangitikei tribes, at Awapuni last night. Kerei — familiarly known as Grey — was supposed to be the oldest native in the Dominion. His age is not exactly known, but his references to event 9in the past which be stated he had seen showed that he had reached over 120 years. Many years ago Kerei married Erene Te Awe Awe, a sister of the chief whose memorial is now a conspicuous object in the Square, and with his wife and Peeti Te Awe Awe brought about friendly relations between the natives of Manawatu and the early cottiers. Though contrary to the wish of hi-, family, it is expected the natives wAI hold a large tangi at Awapuni.
