SOULLING.

WHELCH V. THOROUGHGOOD.

BY "VICTOR."

On Saturday evening I received a wire from George Whelch J s manager, Mr Martin Daly, stating- that the Akaroa sculler had signed the articles for his match with Ben Tboroughgood for the championship of Australia and .£2OO aside, llie message further stated that .£lOO deposit had been forwarded to the Weekly Pjvss, Christchurch, and that Whelch will be leaving for Australia next Wednesday. In forwarding t&e articles to me to obtain Whelch'e signature, Mr T. Dover, vho has been appointed stakeholder, stated that Thoroughgood had signed on the assumption, that Whelch had put up his deposit with me, but I suggested to Whelch in writing him that it would be a saving of time and trouble were he to put up his money with .the Press, and this course has Been adopted. Everyihji&g is now in order for this race, which is to take place on Saturday, November 21st, and which promises to create no end of interest both in Australia an,(i throughout the Dominion. Word copies from Akaroa that Whelch is rowings very well, and his friends expect hint-to show that he can stay rut three miles as well as sprint brilliantly. He is 93 id to be ' maintaining a 30-rate over the £ull distance, which shows that he is in,._good fettle, and must be mowing really- well. He has a shorter and faster stroke than' Webb, who would probably ' get the same pace out of his boat «fc ••»•' 27 gait, but still that means very fattk rowing, if maintained all " the way, I hay* not yet Eeatd -whether Wheloh intends ./taking ' a pacemaker over with him, bt&fbave suggested to him 1 hat ;f; f not ho eifeuld endeavour to secure. Harry Pearce in Sydney. Pearce has a. shed at Middle Harbour, Whelch. could therefore •ecure a pacemaker and training accommodation, at the / same time. If Whalch pat in a fortnight or bo at Middle Harbour he would then have ninyib tune in tne last couple of weeks to 'earn all there is to know about the Raymond Terrace course. However, Whelch will have to be guided by circumstances on his arrival in Sydßey, where he will go armed -with letters of introduction to several of the leading sculling enthusiasts, who may be depended upon to give him the best advice possible.

TOWNS V. BARRY.

George Townß rows Ernest Barry for the championship of England and the Sportsman Cup on -Monday next.

DAY V. KEMP.

Ott "Wednesday »the race between Sid Kemp and Bay is to take place at Coraki. Day is said to have made great improvement under Fogwell's care. After this race is decided Fogwe.ll will leave for New Zealand, as he is to act as Arnst's pacemaker here.

■ii HARRY FLOYD'S LATEST.

The following item taken from the Sydney Sunday Sun, speaks for itself: — "Arnst has got the cold shoulder at Wanganui. First news of the championship aspirant's arrival there comes by postcard from Harry Floyd.' 'It is straight and io the 'pwfht. He says :#— Arrived here (W.-m-ganui) safely"., $tb welc6mc. No offer of any shed for the toate.'lt eeems to me that the great trouble to nifl»f pepple here is that ick is on the facel'bfi the earth. We found th,e river in flood, *6 could not get out for a few days. There is no talk of those long odds we heard of over there. Tails seem to be trailing very low." Time and space arc both at a premium to-night, but I'll have something to say in reference to the above later on.
