MAORIS AND THE NAVY.

(From Our Parliamentary Special. — By Telegraph). WELLINGTON, October 3.

On 13th January, 1908, Sir William Steward wrote to Sir Joseph Ward, complaining that an application from a young Maori to enter the navy had been refused by the captain of the Challenger. "The candidate," he wrote, "is physically a firstclass recruit, just 21 years of age, sft 7in in height, 40in chest measurement, and well educated, speaking a* good Eaglishas does Mr Ngata or Mr Carroll. I was greatly surprised that his being a fullblooded Maori prevents his acceptance." The Prime Minister forwarded the letter to his Excellency the Governor, who sent the correspondence to the Colonial Office without comment.

PUBLIC SUPERANNUATION BILL.

The Public Accounts Committee has reported on the Public Service Classification and Superannuation Amendment "Bill. A proviso has been added to clause 12 regarding retiring allowances as follows :•— "Provided that the Board may, with the approval of the Minister of Education, extend the provisions of this section to any case in which the age -of a male contributor is not less than 60 years, or the age of a female contributor is not less than 50 years.

~ The clause regarding persons re-enter-ing the service after retirement therefrom has been re-drafted.

VACCINATION.

The Petitions Committee have" no recommendation to make regarding the petitions praying for the -repeal of all legislation dealing with vaccination.
