A League Formed
PROPOSED CHRISTCHURCH CANAL
(Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, September 30. A public meeting ■of citizens to consider the canal sclieme 'was held in His Majesty's Theatre to-night, when addresses in. favour of the construction of the canal,' and the establishing of a Canal League were delivered by prominent speakers. The following resolutions were carried unanimously — (1) "That this meeting is of opinion that the construction of a ship canal between the sea and Christchurch is essential to the welfare o? the city and districts adjoining." (2) "That this, meeting affirms the principles that it is not advisable to spend a rery large (amount of capital on Lyttelton Harbour until the question of constructing the canal has been more fully considered." (3) "That an association be formed to. be called the Christchurch Canal Association, to consist of those persons who agree to their names be'ng placed upon the roll of members, and who each agree to contribute not less than Is to the funds of the association, and that the members of the committee be the first Executive Committee of the League, with power to add to their num1 ber. (4) "That copies of the resolutions adoiited by the meeting be forwarded to the" Lyttelton Harbour Board. '
