Aiaeter Haydn Beck, the famous child violinist, will give a couceft at Kai Iwi on Friday week, October Sth. In addition to the items to be played by the boy himself, the programme wiil be supplemented by '■ some of the best local talent. A dance will be held at Ihe conclusion of the concert, arrangements for which are in the hands ' of an energetic committee of ladies, who intend to leave no stone unturned to make the function a success, and so considerably ' augment the fund which is being set apart ; for • the boy's European training. • The,, anniversary social of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church will be held in St. Paul's Hall on Tuesday (to-morrow) evening, commencing at 7.30. A good musical programme, in which some of the best local talent will take part, has been prepared. Refreshments will be provided. The butchers' picnic, to be held on Labour Day, promises to be a very successful function. The committee are working hard to complete arrangements, and it is expected that a large crowd will avail themselves of the opportunity of spending a day up the river if the weather is fine. Attention 's drawn to the distribution of certificates to the successful candidates for tli9 examinations of the Associated Board in theory. This will take placp at St. Paul's Hall on Friday evening, at 2 o'clock, when Mr T. P. Drunhill, of Condon, the examiner of the Associated Board, after presenting the certificates, will deliver a lecture on "Melody." Songs will be rendered by Mr Stevens, and by Miss May Towsey. Mr Dunhill wHI play in a duet, the "Meistersinger Overture,' of Wagner and will play several " pianoforte solos. The lecture will be ( in every sense bright and popular. At the same time it will be instructive, and "will provide an opportunity of hearing a brilliant pianist and composer. There, be a large attendance of those who are at all interested in the cultivation of music. Mr Dunhill'e lectures have everywhere been received with enthusiasm. Any proceeds from the lecture ■wili be devoted to some local charity. At the express wish of the lecturer all candidates for the present practical examinations and successful theory candidates are to be admitted free; for others the price of admission will be one shilling. We recommend to our readers this lecture as one that certainly will prove interesting and enjoyable.
