At Wanganui East.

Considerable interest was taken in the celebration of Dominion' Day by the residents of Wanganui East on Saturday, a large number attending to participate^^irf* the -ceremony of opening the new recreation ground. His Worship the Mayor (Mr vJohn Jones) opened the proceedings by reading the message which the Prime' Mm Tister delivered to the people of this coun,of New Zealand assuming the title of Dominion. The Mayor then formally opened the- new recreation, ground, and Cr Benefield (senior councillor of the borough) distributed the Dominion Day medals to the ' school children. Amongst those present were the Mayoress of Wanganui East; "the Mayor and Mayoress of Wanganui (Mr and Mrs C. E. Mackay), Crs Battle and Poynter (of the Wanganui Borough Council); Grs O'Leary, McCaul, and Holloway (of the Wanganui East Borough. Council), ■Mr A. A. Browne, and Mr J. T. Hogan, M.P.

The new recreation ground is about &} acres in extent, nicely situated, and .admirably suited for a sports ground. Mr J. Anderson was accorded three hearty cheers for the interest he had taken in the matter of procuring' this ground, and cheers were also given for Mr Lambert, Mr Hogan, and the Hon. Mr McNab (Minister of Lands), who enabled „the borough to obtain what they so desired..

Mr Hogan, who had travelled from Wellington, to attend the function, made a few well-chosen remarks, in the course of which he advised that working bees should be formed and a start made to beautify,, and improve the Recreation Ground. Short addresses were also given by the, Mayor of Wanganui, Crs Battle and Benefieiu, and Mr Anderson.

The, school children, prior to receiving their medals, sainted the flag. During 1 the afternoon the Salvation, Army band played a number of selections ,and the interesting proceedings terminated about four o'clock.
