Mr Hearst has published additional letters showing that eminent Republican, and Democratic politicians tendered legislative services for financial support. The disclosure has evoked frantic expressions of public disgust. Mr Foraker declared that Mr Taft had consorted with the Standard Oil magnates, and President Roosevelt's conduct since the charges were made indicated that he had a guilty conscience. ' The Democrats i-ccuse Cornelius Bliss, treasurer of the 'Republican National Party, on behalf of Mr Cortelyou, chairman of the Republican National Committee, with levying a contribution of ,£20.000 sterling upon Rogers and Archbold (representing the Standard Oil Trust) on the understanding that the Administration would act leea harshly towards the corporation. The Democrats admit that President Roosevelt directed the committee to return the money, but the money was spent nevertheless, and a little later the Standard Oil Trust was requested to furnish more. Mr Rogers declined, intimating that he had never received back the £20,000 previously given. He accused President Roosevelt ot knowing that that sum was not only accepted but used.
