CORRESPONDENCE.

TO THJS KDITOB.

Sir,— Mr Robert Ncilbou ucvor .stems to tire- of attempting io cast a blur on the Wanganui fca&t borough Council ami all its worKs. iv his latest eftudiou tuc pioposed.loau ot ,£4,000 is to his mind "not 6f much importance to the welfare or advancement of the district as a whole." l^ct me tell Mr Ncilson that, if it had not been for the disgraceful state to which Uie Matarongaongu Road Board had brought the district before il was handed over to the Council, the major part of Itie loan would never have been required. Ihe mam roads (viz., River Bank and No. 3 Line), were glaring example? of muddled mismanagement, wunet there was. hardly a bridge in the .district that was safe for traffiq. Mr Neilson must be held .responsible for this,, as he was the shining light and bright .example: of .the, Boara. ihe Council havej with the. limited funds at their command* put the roads and bridges in fair order, but the roads require renewing from end < o enu. I imagine the ratepayers want, good w roads, briuge or no bridge — tram or nq tram. The purpose of the other' items of the loan are equally ecessary. A „recveation ground (Half the. cost of which is subsidised by the Government) will surely be wanted in the near .future, whilst a town hall (modest perhaps in dimensions, but big enough to supply an urgent want for some years, to come) is certainly a public necessity.' Mr Neilson evidently clings to the con-, viction that he has a monopoly of all the initiative enterprises and brains ot the district, but .the past ,history of the district Road .Board leads many to dare to think otherwise. More, than 'Mr Neilson are cou9ideriug the bridge question, although, they will not resort to. upsetting the Councils valuation «n a trifling technicality as a means towards the end. The wisdom of this is only apparent to those of Mr Neilson's mental calibre. The conflicting interests to which Mr Neilson refers exists for the most part in his own fertile brain, and one is almost forced to the conclusion that 'tho wish is father to tho thought. I hayei not gone into the mattei; of figures,' Juit I think I am safe in saying that fully half of the Borough's expenditure has 1 ' been devoted to the district north of the railway line, and yet we have a Mayor from the other end. As iv these smaller Matters, so in the larger questions, Mr Neilson will find that the parocialism which he infers exist?, is only another of the- delusions he tries to galvanise into a semblance of rascal'ty. It is to be hoped tl>st when- the time comes to decide not rrnty to build a bridge but also as to wlvre it^should span the river, Mr Neilsou will be the last to show a trace of the parochial' spirit which he. so much deplores but will join heartily with the majority to get the Borough connected up with the mother town, wherever the junction may be. And for goodness sake, Mr Neilsoh, don't try to set the district by the eai-3 when all parts are working harmo-niomly together. No town has any time for mischief makers. — Youra, COUNCILLOR.
