WHARF SHED ACCOMMODATION.

I Communication from Minister of Public Works. Mr J. L. Stevenson, lion, secretary of the Wanganui Chamber of Commerce, reI ceived the following letter last night from I the Hon. Wm. Hall-Jones, Minister for Railways, in reply to the Chamber's communication re wharf sfced enlargement : — Head Office, Wellington, Bth May, 1908. Sir, — With reference to your letter of 15th ultimo, covering letter from the Mar r , / ton Chamber of Commerce respecting the necessity for the enlargement of the goods shed on the Wanganui wharf with a view to obviating the delay which, it is asserted, now takes place in despatching sea-borne goods arrived at Wanganui for country stations, I have the honour to inform you that the matter has been very exhaustively inquired into, and after carefully considering the whole of the facts as put before me by those who urged the necessity for enlargement of the shed, I have directed that an addition of 100 ft is to be made and the work will be put in hand as early as possible. The shed as enlarged will, in my opinion, be amply sufficient to meet all the requirements of the business for many years to come, more especially in view of the fact the completion of the Main Trunk Railway and the alteration that may take place in connection with the Manawatu Railway will no doubt have a considerable effect on the trend of the traffic for the townships in the district around Wangaui, which now get their goods by sea via Wanganui instead of by rail from Wellington. — I have the honour to be, etc., WM. HALL-JONES. Minister for Railways. The Secretary, Chamber of Commerce, • Wanganui. Mr George Caiman, managing director of the Southern Cross Biscuit Company, wrote to the Department on the above subject, and has received the following reply : Head Office, Wellington, May Bth, 1908. Sir, — With reference to your letter of the Bth ultimo respecting the necessity for increasing the size of the Wanganui wharf shed, I have the honour, by direction of the Minister for Railways, to inform you that the matter has received careful consideration, and he has instructed tjiat the «hed is to be lengthened by 100 ft. The Minister is of opinion, after having given full consideration to the representations that have been made to him. this addition will be ample to meet all the requirements of the present and prospective business at Wanganui for many years to come. The work will be put in hand at an early date. — I have the honour to be, etc., T. RONAYNE, General Manager. The Managing Director, Southern Cross Biscuit Co., Ltd., Wanganui.
