PERILS OF THE SEA.

The Taviuni Inquiry.

(Per United Press Association/. WESTPORT, May 4. At the Taviuni enquiry Mr McDonald appears for the Customs and Harbour Board, Mr Free for Captain Brophy, and Mr Molony for the officers of the ship. Captain Brophy's evidence occupied till 1 p.m. He attributed the mishap to an error of judgment on his part in gauging his distance from the port lights. He thought the port lights should be more powerful, considering the extension of the shoal banks at the place where he struck, which was not sufficiently shown on the latest (1904) charts.
