MELBOURNE, April 30.

In 1906 the Commonwealth Government passed an Act abolishing the rate of a halfpenny per word previously paid to the Eastern Extension Company on messages transmitted by the Tasmanian cables, leaving the company only a minimum sum guaranteed. The company is now issuing a writ against the 1 Government, claiming damages equal to the difference between the guarantee and the receipts if the halfpenny rate had been guaranteed.
