The Collegiate School is now closed for the usual term holidays of three weeks. The members of the Harbour Board paid a visit of inspection to the Kaiw haiki quarries this afternoon, going up river in the tug Mascotte.' Notice is given by, advertisement in anothec column that the water will be shut off from the mains in the Avenue, from Maria Place to Riugway Street, to-mor-row (Friday) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Captain Edwin wired at one p.m. to-day : — Southerly moderate to strong winds; glass little movement, but fall soon ; westerly moderate to strong winds after 16 hours; tides moderate; sea moderate. A shipment of 3000 bricks has just left Patea for Westpprt, and the local gaper understands there is every prospect of a large trade in bricks being opened up with the West Coast. A meeting of the Licensing Committee will be held at 10 o'clock to-morrow morning to deal with an application for a temporary transfer of the license of the Masonic Hotel from Dumbleton to Cough lan. A public mecling will be hold in the A L.C. Hall, Aramoho, on Wednesday rext. May 6th, at 8 p.m., to consider tho proposals put forward for amalgamat ; on with the borough. The committee of the Wanganui Choral Society had a very satisfactory meeting last night. Eghty-seven names were given as performing members, those of gentlemen cx.j3cding expectations. The list of honorary r. tmbers, too, hail a good start. The election of a committee for the Mosstown school resulted in the return of the old committee with the exception of one member, who did not seek reelection. The committee is as follows: — Messrs J. Wilson (chairman), P. Comrie, John Barnes, Allen, D. Shaw, B. Stuckey, and Munro. A large number of applications were received at the Crown Lands Office at I Auckland yesterday for allotments under optional tenures. There are about 14,400 acres to be balloted for in the Mongomti, Hokianga, and Whangarei districts. A large number of applicants came from the South, chiefly from the Wellington and Tarar.aki districts. The trout-fishing season closed to-day, and to-morrow the season for game shooting opens. Quite a number of local shots have left town for likely spots for the opening day. Ducks are said to be more plentiful than usual, and some good sport is practically assured for the early shootists. Tlu following paragraph appears in a southern exchange: — A young married couple recently took a contract for grubbing gorse in the Kai Iwi district, and may now be seen working side by side. They live in a tent. Thus are husband and wife commencing the work of establishing themselves on the land. Only one offender, a young man, was before the Court to-day. He Was convicted and discharged by Messrs A. A. Gower and H. S. G. Harper, J.s P. Sergt. Bourke said the accused jgras an absconder from the Burnham Industrial School. He had been licensed out, and had run away from his licensed employers, coming to Wanganui, where he had worked steadily for the past 12 months. The police therefore simply kept him under their eye, but he had latterly been misbehaving, and they would now detain him and await a communication from the Education Department as to whether he was to be returned to the school or not. The Patea branch of the Farmers' Union now has a membership of 67, while the year just- ended, left the Society with a credit balance of .£5 9s 6d. Mr A. E. Washer has been elected chairman for the ensuing year, Mr. E. Exley vice-chairmait, and Mr Williamson secretary and treasurer. The subscription was fixed at 6s. The following remits 'to the Conference were passed: — That the Union use its best endeavours to get the banks to ffo away with their charge for keeping current accounts. That any railway truck despatched to a flag station to be loaded shall have affixed a card bearing the name of the person ordering it, and it be made an offence for anyone ese to remove the card or use such truck.
