THE C.C. AND D. CO., LTD. MARKET REPORT.

LONDON, February 21.

Since our last report was iesued there has been practically no change in the market calling for any special comment. There is a fair enquiry for anything really choice, but -ordinary qualities have found'a quiet and almost dragging sale. Prices for home-bred beef have been mairtained wich difficulty, but home-bred mutton, in the absence of any competition from Dutch supplies, has been held firm at last prices. The total quantities of meat - passed through Smi+hfield last Week showed a considerable reduction on the total for the preceding week, but the pitchings in the early part of the current week were fairly heavy. North American chilled be^f shows no change in value, but' South American chilled bref is distinctly cheaper' at about 4d per lb. for hinds and 3 l-8d per lb. for fores. Veal and pork are in short supply aud rather dearer.

New Zealand Mutton. — The arrivals during the week consist of the lonic with 10,260 carcases and Whakatane with 3547 carcases. The supply of good Canterbury sheep is still very ajjmited, and very little business is being done at the quotation of 4Jd per lb. Southland sheep are daily in evidence in moderate quantities, selling at 3£d to 3]d per lb. North Island brands are plentiful, but the output has been fairly well maintained, and quotations are firm at 3^d to 3jjd rer lb. The general tone has improved slightly, and a little more life in the demand would probably bring about an advance in values.

South American Mutton. — Stocks have been increased by 14,486 carcases per Highland Enterprise, 10,750 carcases per Amiral Rigault, and 29,297 carcases per Royston Grange. Sales are still being pressed by some holders, with the result that values remain at 2sd tc 3 l-8d per lb. Good lis>ht weight sheep arc scarce, and consequently the general average realised is very close to the former figure. Australian Mutton. — Arrivab have been numerous, consisting of the Wakool, 1516 carcases, Langton Grange, 3153 carcases; Fraex, 7851 carcases; Mongolia 2014 carcases; Buteshire, 3000 carcases, and Runic, 14.594 carcases. Sales have been made a little more easily at 2Jd to 3d per lb. for wethers and 2|d per lb. for light plain ewes.

New Zealand Lambs.— Further supplies amounting to 34,930 carcases have come to hand. Canterbury lambs are now available, and good light weights are making up to 6d per ib. The bulk of the offerings, however, ar,? North Islands, and, although mostly of good quality, these have included some very piain carcases. Priece range from about SJd'down to 5 l-8d per lb. Australian Lambs. — The additions to stocks amount to 150,380 carcases. These lamts are moving very freely,, and prices hay? hardened a little. The. bottom quotation for the plain and inferior carcases is now 3£d per lb. Medium weights of average quality sell at about 4^d per lb, and llio carcases which commanded od per lb are now getting very scarce. Frozen Beef.— Receipts consist of 3615 quarters from Now Zealand, 5985 quarters from Australia, and~ 25,696 quarters from South America. Sales have been readily made at last quotations, but hinds have a filightlv weaker tendency, while fores remain in request.
