SAMPLE ADELAIDE GRAPES.

We have to acknowledge the receipt from Mfcesrs A. Hatrick and Co. of a sample' of Adelaide grapes. They were shipped to the . firm from Adelaide via Melboifrne and ' the Bluff; p'abked in r a patent liquid preserving composition invented by Mr. E. Mazure, managing director of Auldana Vineyards in Adelaide. The Adelaide people have been making trial shipments to Sydney and their grapes have turned out in very fine condition, even the bloom remaining on them. To teßt how' they will turn out after a longer carriage and handling the Auldana Company sent Messrs A. Hatrick and Co. a quarter cask which was shipped a fortnight ago. Considering that it is late in the season, and taking into consideration the large package- — a quarter cask — they have turned out very well. If this process proves successful it will mean thousands of pounds' to the Australian grape growers in their export trade.

Following is an abstract from a South Australian newspaper, concerning Auldana grapes in Sydney: — '"At the invitation of the Sydney management of the Auldana vineyards 1 , a number of gentlemen interested in the wine trade assembled at the firm's office, Angel Place, to inspect and sample grapes received from the Australian vineyards. Magill, some five miles from Adelaide, South Australia (says the Sydney Evening News). The grapes had been packed eight days previously by a patent process discovered by Mr E. Mazure, the managing director of the company, and were in excellent condition. They were sent in a specially prepared liquid in casks After" th"c inspection several toasts were honoured. Mr J. Cusack, presided, and Messrs F. A. Iredale, J. Cox, Quinn, Tobias, and J. L. Lee spoke in complimentary terms of the firm and of the successful experiment in fruit carriage which had been made. Replying to the toast of his health, Mr E. Walkley, general manager in Sydney, said that the Auldana vineyards were planted in 1851. At present there were 200 acres under cultivation, the -yearly output of high-class wines being 130,000 gallons. The firm's champagne which was first made m 1898 had proved extremely successful. The N.S.W. branch was opened | less than 2 years ago and the trade se1 cured was constantly increasing."
