COURTS AND OFFENCES.

The Birch for a Bad Boy.

\Pet United Press Association.)

INVERCARGILL, March 27.

Adam Middlemiss, 15 years of age, was charged with placing an obstruction on the Kingston railway. Fortunately the train was going up hill at the time, and the driver was able to pull up, but not before the engine passed over one piece of iron. The Magistrate said it was no use sending the boy to gaol, and he was too old for an industrial school. He ordered him to receive 12 strokes of the birch rod.
