TECHNICAL SCHOOLS.

"Magnificent !" is the only word which will describe the exhibition of work frj Technical School pupils. One outstanding feature of this section is that the exhib ; ts shown are all the work of local students, and while it would be desirable to see competition from outside centres, a Wanpenui man cannot but feel a justifiable Dride in noting the splendid display made by ihe local institution, a display which does credit alike to the students and their irfetructora. -The- most . noticeable display ia that in the classes for carving, prom inert iir which is the mantel and overmantel exhibited by A. C. Robertson. This magnificent example of the woodcarver's oraft bore off a gold medal at the International Exhibition at Christchurch, and easily took honours to-day. It is a truly unique exhibit and was greatly admired. Other < examples of relict and chip carving m- v eluded mirror frames, boxes, piano stools, tables, panels and photo frames, while some very pretty examples of incised carving included tea trays, frames and cabinets. In modelling F. Caddy shows two fine pieces of work. The plumbers' exhibit shows evidence of first-class workmanship, while the carpenters' and ioiners' work is quite a revelation of the useful instruction imparted at the Techn'cil School, the exhibits of doors, sashes and staircases being very creditable. The architectural and mechanical drawing niso shows evidence of thorough study, vh'Je the paintings, drawings, shapings from the- cast, etc., are equally excellent with the exhibits in the more prosaic but useful acts of sign writing, design, etc. Following were the awards: —

There is a paucity of entries itt the Public Schools classes, and, owing to want of room, they are cramped into a Very small space, preventing anything lik^p an effective display.* The quality of the exhibits calls for no special remark, in fact, is rather disappointing.
