THE TURAKINA FIRE.
(Per United Press Association). WELLINGTON, October 8.
Pumping was continued on board the Turakina to-day. The pumps were unworkable in No. 1 hold owing to the large quantity of rubbish choking the valves. Attention was confined to No. 3 hold, into which No. 1 drains. Pumping is continued at intervals' in the engine room, into which the water from the three foreholds has drained. The water is now well down.
The Turakina is now afloat, but she still has a list to port. To-morrow she will be removed from her present berth to the Glasgow wharf. The rabbits (some 2000 cases) will be turned into manure. The beef and mutton will be boiled down. The butter will be sold in the interests of thoee concerned.
The Stormbird is loading damaged wool for Napier. The extent of the fire in the forehold is only becoming more apparent as the men get lower. The origin of the fire was at first thought to have been among the flax in the 'tween decks, but it now seems to have been much deeper down, for the destruction, now that the bottom bales are almost in sight, has been as thorough in this portion of the compartment as in any other.
