PERSONAL.

Mr E. R. C. Bowen. Collector of Customs at Napier, is retiring from the service, with which he has .been connected for over forty years. He joined the Customs Department at Hokitika in 1866, and was afterwards stationed at Greymouth, Westport, and Okarito. After service at Dunedin and Invercargill, he was appointed land waiter at Wellington in 1884; then he served in Auckland and a 9 landing

surveyor at Dunedin. In 1892 he was transferred to Napier as Collector. The officers of the Customs Department _at Napier made him a valuable presentation on Monday. Mr Bowen is succeeded by Mr W. Sibhald.
