THE ENGLISH TEAM'S NEW ZEALAND TOUR.

MATCH AGAINST WANGANUI. The Marylebone Club's team of amateur cricketers commenced the second match of the tour on Cook's Gardens today against a Wanganui representative combination. The weather was ideal and tbe wicket in good order. R. H. Fox and P.'Tl. May (the fast bowler) are standing out of the visitors' team. The latter is suffering from a slight strain, THE PLAY. There were not a great many present when the game commenced, but later on the attendance increased a little. The local team, who lost the toss, fielded rith 13 men, and will bat with 15. The visitors decided to bat, and punctually at 11.30 Cafiftain Marshall led the Wanganui team into the field. They were followed by the first pair of English batsmen— P. R. Johnson and C. E. De Trafford, the latter facing Broad, who bowled from the northern end. De Trafford* opened his account with a single off the second ball, and followed this up with a fourer, a nice stroke. With the last ball of the over Johnson secured a single. On changing ends Pearpoint took up the bowling. Off his first over eight runs were scored, the fielding being very faulty. Both batsmen were playing with confidence, and in Broad's second over 11 runs were added, including a nice fourer by Johnson, and 30 runs weer registered inside the first 15 minutes. A couple of fourers by De Trafford enabled the score to reach 39 at the end of the first four overs. A big hit by De Trafford just failed to reach the boundary, and three only were registered. A nice fourer to leg followed, and then a few singles were scored, and 50 was up in a little over quarter of an hour. The score continued to mount rapidly, both batsmen hitting freely. The first change in the bowling was made with the •core at 57, when Turner replaced Pearpoint. Off his third ball De Trafford skied one, but it fell out of reach of Hitchings in the long field and two were scored off it. Another two and a single were hit off the over. At the end of the first twenty-five minutes' play the score stood at 81, De Trafford being 36 and Johnson 33. Then Broad registered the first maiden over of the match. The fielding now appeared to liven up a bit, and the bowlers were keeping a better length. Off the last ball of Turner's second over De Trafford hit one hard to mid-off, which Marshall fielded brilliantly and returned smartly to Arlfwright, who whipped off the bails before the striker, who had started to run, could get back to his crease, and De Trafford had to retire, after compiling 36 in good style. 77 — 1—36.1 — 36. Harrison commenced with a fourer off Turner and repeated the dose immediately afterwards, three singles following in succession to the same batsman. He added four more and then had a let off, hitting one up to leg which the fieldsman failed to Teach. He then got one well away to square leg, the bfcfl hitting the roller, but a boundary was allowed. A little later a round of applause greeted the appearance of the century', a fourer to Johnson doing the trick, and bringing his own score up to 43. A four and a three followed to Johnson—All run out. A litle later he drove one Sard back to Turner, who held it at the second- attempt, being deservedly applauded, as was also Johnson — who had played very finely for his "runs — on returning to the pavilion. 112—2—50. W. B. Burns next appeared, and opened his account with a single off Turner, who was bowling well, varying his pace and breaking nicely. Another change of bowling was now made, Brown going on in place of Broad, and his first over was a maiden — the sfcond so far registered. A three by Harrison off Turner was followed by a couple of singles and a brace by Burns, and then Harrison got Brown away to leg for four, bringing 124 up. Off the third ball of Turner's next over Harrison had a narrow shave from being thrown out, but Turner missed the wicket. A rather uppish hit to leg by Harrison off Brown was the next item, the ball reaching the boundary. A four to Burns was then recorded, three being the result of an overthrown by Wilder. Another fourer and' a brace by the same batsman brought 140 up. Harrison then hit a couple of threes in succession off Turner, and shortly afterwards he got the ball away nicely to leg and 150 was on the board. Brown then sent down another maiden, bowling a very good length. Harrison then cut Turner nicely for four, which were all run out. The score mounted by singles to 160. Luxford was then given a turn with the ball iv place of Turner, Burns getting his second ball away for a single, and Harrison scoring a fourer off the next. A single by Burns and a fourer by the same batsman brought 170 up as the adjournment for luncheon was taken at one o'clock. The following were the scores up to the time of our going to press: — ENGLISHMEN.— First Innings. C. E. de Trafford, run out 36 P. R. Johnston, c and b Turner 50 W. P. Harrison, b Broad 103 W. B.
