Rama, winner of the Johannesburg Handicap, value 2000 soys, a few weeks asro, is the property of Mr R. Wotton, who, after a short stay in South Africa, will return to England in time for the opening of the racing season, taking Rama and several other horses with him. Rama is a half-sister of the Derby winner, Spearmint, and therefore valuable as a brood mare. , The race for the Gold Cup at Egham in 1806 produced an unusual spectacle. The jockeys of the first five were instructed not to make play, and by way of fulfilling their orders they waited the first mile of the four, "after which commenced severe running, the first four running head and head, and continued so until a few lengths of the winning post." Just prior to the date of the acceptances for the Auckland Cup and Railway Handicap, Boomerang and King Billy were backed for the double to win ,£2OOO. It is considered a certain thin? that Glenculloch will beat Eona over six h\r-
longs when they meet, though it is conceded that Eona is the faster of the pair over a shorter 'distance. i The Great Northern Derby looks a srift for Cambrian, though a good dtnl <k- j pends upon how he comes through ln-^ first day's engagements. Grand < Rapid 6is engaged in the forth Cup, of 200 soys. "Templar." in tin- Xcw Zealand Eeferee, say? of Ghoorka'rf and Douche's form at Feildii)? tliiii that of Ghoorka was the nios! eoi) vim inn-, but. he doubts if either horse will pro\e capable of winning the Auckland Cup.
