AUCKLAND, November 30.

The Hon. B. McXab was entertained at a dinner at Clevedon by the Liberal and Labour Federation. He said that much of the so-called poverty-striken land in tho North would be found to carry more sheep to tbm acre than some of the land in the Sonth. In regard to the Land Bill, he **id that if the Government, after tiring its last' shot, failed to secure the country's support of the measure, it would have to goont of existence.

Mr McNab addressed a public meeting •on the Land Bill in the evening. A resolution, was carried to the effect that no •Iteration should be made in the existing Und/ law whereby the optional system wonld be done away with, especially as the e^Qence before the Land Commission was «utirely in favour of the freehold. This was carried in the form of an amendment to a motion expressing approval of the Land Bill by a very large majority, its supporters enthusiastically shouting, "The Freehold ! The Freehold ."' as they held up their hauls.

The Rev. E. W. Matthewa, secretary of the British and Foreign Sailors' Society, London, is visiting Wanganui, and is the ffue«t of the Rev. J. G. Chapman. Mr Matthews is in the colony in connection with th« "Victory" stall at the Christchurch Exhibition, where are being exhibited shields, busts, charms, and other memoatoes of Nelson, England's sreat naval ■*ro, made from the Victory. Nelson's old ship was presented by his Majesty the King to the Society which Mr Matthews represents. A presentation is to be made to the Borough of a "Nelson memento " in the Borough Council Chambers this evening at 8 o'clock, to which function the public are invited. His Worship the Mayor will preside.
