THE EXHIBITION BAND CONTEST.
The above event, which takes place at the latter end of February next, will be the most representative contest ever held in Australasia. For the first time in the history of New Zealand contests Australia will be represented. Ac the New South Wales Band Association is sending the Newcastle combination, which won the test contest held in Sydney, and Mr E. T. Code, of Melbourne, who will be remembered as judge of the contest held in Wanganui, is also bringing his famous combination, the heroes of many a bard fought contest. The Kaikorai, Woolston, and Wellington bands will all be there, and so will Wanganui. Again we are face to face with the oosfc of maintaining an up-to-date band for to compete at this great meeting — and everyone must admit it will be a thousand pities if they do not, some .£350 is required. New uniforms have been ordered, costing some .£2OO, and they were absolutely necessary as the old ones have been in constant -use for nine years, and the expenses of the band to visit Christchurch will take over .£2OO also, thus swamping all funds in hand and leaving a big debit margin. It is the intention of the members to take up a few collections when playing out, and also to arrange for carolling on Christmas Eve and the following day, and we do not think that the citizens will grudge a few shillings this way. This will no doubt help, but something much more substantial must be done. It has been suggested that the Carnival Committee might sub-let the Opera House to the Band for Christmas Week, and suggestions be invited from the public to fill up an attractive week. That the matter is worthy of the serious attention of the citizens, we quite believe, as it will more than repay from an advertising point of view. In fact money could not buy the public and wide-world notice the winning of the contest would give Wanganui.
Captain Edwin telegraphs: — Gale from' between north and west and south-west, glass fall, tides high, sea heavy, rain probable.
