THE TRAMWAYS.

Tramway matteis were again before the Borough Council last night, A letter was read from. Mr F. H. Chamberlain, consulting tramways engineer, containing recommendations for the sending out of specifications. He thought oJ copies should be sent out in' various directions. — The matter was referred to the Tramways Committee. The Tramways Committee reported having considered detail matters in connection with the proposed loan for electric tramways, and submitted the following for the Council's approval: — That the amount to be raised be £40,000 and that a sinking fund be established during the currency of the loan of £1 lCs per cent per annum toward repayment of the loan, and that an annually recurring rate of 8d in the £ be pledged by way of security for payment of interest and sinking fund ; that the cost of raising tho loan and the first year's interest be not paid out of the loan ; and that the Borough solicitor be instructed to prepare the voting paper and all necessary advertisements. The report was adopted, Cr. Liffiton dissenting. On the motion of Cr. Williams it was lcoolved that the currency of the loan bt 20 years. Cr CALMAN inquired what progress was being made in connection with the tramways, arid whether plans and specifications • were ready to lay on the table. The MAYOR said "No," pending the poll for the electric trans*. Cr- PTJUiiETi a-stod i£ tli^y vcei-e Mot g-o-ing on with what was applicable to both the electric and eltam systems. The MAYOR said that was so. The plans and specifications were being printed, and the Borough Solicitor was drafting the Order-in-Council in so far as it related to matters applicable to both systems, Thcro was no unnecessary delay, and they could go no further till the plans were ready, whichever service they might adopt.
