The bowlers opened their campaign in New South Wales in a six-rink match against the Northern District at Maitland. There was fine cool weather, with a strong breeze across the green. In the earlier half of the game the visitors secured a fair lead, but the locals, playing a good game, wore them down and. made a close finish of it. McLaren's team on No. 2 played a capital game. The skipper outgeneralled his rival at every point. Payne also kept his men well in hand, finishing with a respectable margin, but tho visitors on No. 3 went to pieces, and on No. 6 play for the major part of the game was very indifferent. Scores : — No. 1 rink.— Akhurst, Scott, Weddell, Wheeler (skip) 20, Northern District 18. No. 2. — Durie, Buchanan, Osmond, McLarin (skip) 31, Northern District 23.
