WANGANUI J.C. SPRING MEETING.

TRAINING NOTES.

The near approach of the Wanganui Jockey Club's Spring Meeting has had the effect of quickening the interest in tho training o x f "ations on the local tracks, and a fair number of touts have been out the last few mornings to watch the gallops. A number of the visiting horses have already arrived, amongst them being Blazing Star and Golden Cairn (a pair of Sir George Clifford's colts, which are engaged in the Wanganui Guineas), Tangimoana and Grand Slam (two other Guineas candidates), and several others. Yesterday morning the weather was favourable, but very little work was done, the only one to be sent along being Tautoru, who covered seven furlongs at a smart pace. The Lethe gelding was fancied by his connection for his races at Bulls, but is too big^ yet, and could do no better than run third in the Flying the first day, while in the big money the second day he finished last. Were the races two or three weeks off Tautoru would have a big chance of picking up a stake, but he appears to want a few good solid gallops before being cherry ripe. The weather was beautifully fine this morning, when Golden Cairn and Blazing Star were the first to work, the pair running a mile together in lmin 50sec. Vol ume and Crimson Lake jumped off together, but the latter was pulled out after going four furlongs, Volume going on and finishing a mile. Halberdier galloped a couple of rounds solus at a fair pace. The old fellow looks very weir<m it, and moved pleasingly. If he kedps sound he should reward his owner with a stake or two later on. ' Grand Slam and Tangimoana were associated in a seven furlong spin, the time occupied being lmin 35sec, with a flying start. Albuera (solus) took a second longer over a similar journey. Slio is very fit. Irish Rifle Whs given a round on the plough and then a round on the grass, moving very nicely, but making a noise. Seaman and Sedgemoor were sent a couple of rounds, the former especially pleasing, and being very .anxious to get his head. Fontenoy, St. Lyra, and Armistice jumped off from the half mile post together, the former galloping on the extreme outside of the track, and bowling along in the most resolute style for half a mile. Owing to the boy on Armi&t'ce losing one of his stirrup irons, he could not control the mare, and she covered three and a half miles at a great pace before she was stopped. The New Zealand Cup candidate appeared to be in gfcat heart, and the way she carried out her self-imposed task prove? that she must be very well, though such a serve gruelling would not do her any good. The daughter of Malyiki pulled up well, considering, and it is to be hoped that she will not be any the worse for her exertions. A number of other horses did useful work.

Owners and trainers are reminded of the fact that acceptances for the Gonyillc Hack Hurdles and Putiki Hack Handicap close with Mr F. Moffatt, secretary, at 9 o'clock this, evening.
