A Dunedin Sensation.
Serious Charge Against Wellknown Chemist. (Per United Press Association). DUNEDIN, September 23. The arrest of J. R. Hayne, a well-known chemist, on a charge of the manslaughter of Margaret Kendrick, caused some sensation. Hayne was brought up before Mr C. C. Graham, S.M. Chief Detective Herbert said an illegal operation on the woman Kendrick was alleged to have been performed' on the 12th instant. She was sent to the hospital, and died there at 3 o'clock on Saturday morning, her dying depositions having been taken by Mr Widdowson, S.M. The detective asked for a remand, as there had been no tinW to make inquiries, and said he had been instructed to oppose the granting of bail. He might mention that the accused had on him a loaded revolver >\lien arrested. Mr Solomon, who appeared for Hayne, quoted authorities to show that hail should be granted. The Magistrate declined to take the tcspon=sil'ility of (jrantincr bail, and the ;w-on-*d was remanded til! next Paiurdav.
