U.B.C. VILLAGE FAIR.

Matters in connection with the above, which opens in the Drill Hall on Ist October, are booming. The Misses Speed, who danced before delighted audiences at a recent bazaar in Wellington, will perform a number of quaint and fancy dances each evening. The public should taue *l»e opportunity of witnessing these graceful and clever" juvenile performers. Special scenery ifi being painted to enable the "Living Saturday" to be put on in a complete manner. The well-known "Policemen's Chorus" from "The Pirates of Penzivnee" will be rendered by twelve youthful men in blue; the ever favourite butterfly dance will be danced by a lady possessing all the grace and skill necessary for an item of this kind, while the wee dots who perform a cake- walk should be the iroans of causing much merriment. The Shepherdess's dance, by eight young ladies, is picturesque and beautiful, the various evolutions, assisted by the limelight, producing a .pleasing effect to the eye. Twenty-four ydung ladies have been assiduously practising fancy marches. These always find favour with the public. Some beautiful work will be on sale at the various stalls, and stallholders should experience a busy time. The side shows will comprise a shooting-gallery, Aunt Sally, football kicking competition, rope quoits, chamber of mysteries, consisting of illusions such as "the decapitated head," "the inormaid," etc., and should furnish plenty of amusement for both young and old. The first prize in connection with the art union is en view in Messrs Tingey's window in the Avenue, and has been the subjest of much favourable comment. One and all agree that the picture is the work of an artist of ability, and that to procure such a picture for a shilling is a chance that seldom come 9. The second prize, a handsome sideboard, is on view at Brown© and Wainwright's, Ridgway Street. Eighteen other prizes will be given away. They consist ot paintings, carved picture frames, handsome overmantel, painted mirrors, etc.
