WELLINGTON, July 16. The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cable from the ilisfh Commissioner, dated London, July 14th: — There is dull sale for all qiialitina of mutton. The average price of light-weight Canterbury brands ia 3id, heavy weights 3jjd. North Island mutton is selling at Ma test quality, while eecond-class quality in quoted at 3id. The lamb markel. is steady, an immediate < hanse in pricsa w expected. Canterbury brands arc quoted at 5 l-Bd. other than Canterbury 4Jd. The beef market la dull, owing to heavy cupping of River Plate, and there is no change in prices to report.
The butter market is very firm, with an exceptional demand for New Zealand butter, owing to 4short supply on hand Choice No'\' Zealand brands are selling at 106s; Danish 112s: Siberian 97s per cwt.
Tho rheea<» market is very firm, with a good deTnr.ud. New Zealand offerings are snisill. (>4« being obtained for ■wlilte makes, and CO* per cwt for coloured.
Tho hemp »>arket is very firm and the niai-kft is exciled. There ia a -^dilative demand, owing 1 to reports from J^aniila indicating a light shipment fronj there. There is lar^« business doing, and prices are strops:. Stocks to hand are very li'.'ht. G.l'.J\.^., Wellington, on spot, ia eelhng at J635 pt-r ton; October- J>ecenibcr snipments, JC34 lfte. The prirc of fair current SlaniUa on spot to-day is .£43 10a per ton. There is no alteration in the cocksfoot ered market hinre last week. "
The wn\ market ie steady, and prices are well maintained.
Kauri gum : The following prices are current • — Ordinary fair, tbrse-quartere scraped, J. 6 16s per cwt ; fair, half scraped SiVpcr cwt; brown, fair, half to threeqnarterß RTapcd, 85s per cwt ; brown picking;*, ronnir.on to goad, 47 per cwt; bush, fair to good, rmle amber, t-craped, is getting srarce. There is no demand for the poorer grades.
