EDUCATION BOARD.

The regular monthly meeting of the Education Board was held last evening. Present: — Messrs F. Pirani (chairman), G. Carson, E. Dixon, A. H. Atkinson, F. M. Spurdle, A. Fraser, H. E. Adams, and F. Y. Lethbridge, M.H.R. MINUTES.— The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. FINANCE.— The cash statement showed a balance to credit of general account of 41476 16s 7d, and to debit of maintenance of £913 10s. RESIGNATIONS.— Mount Curl, E. Chadwick; Rongotea, J. A. Finlayson. APPLICATION.— The application of Miss A. M. Martin, of Wellington, for a pupil-teachership, was referred to the Chief Inspector. CAMPBELL STREET.^The chairman's proposals to the committee re staff were endorsed.

SALARY.— The Department wrote agreeing to pay JB2OO towards the salary of Mr Rutherford, special assistant at the Wanganu District High School. LEAVE OF ABSENCE.— Leave of absence was granted to Miss A. McEwen (Bulls), 2 weeks; Miss A. GU Hogg (relieving teacher), 1 'week ; Mr* Peat ( Wanganui Infants'), 1 month. GYMNASTICS.— An application from Mr E. J. Collins, of Bristol, Ebgland, for position a» gymnastic instructor, was referred to the "Chief Inspector. REPORTS. — The usual reports from the Chairman, Selection Committee, Chief Inspector, and Technical School Committee were read and adopted. ACCOUNTS.— Accounts amounting to JE2164 10s 6d were passed for payment. WANGANUI DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL. — Application for single desks and hyloplate held over for a month. WAVERLEY.— Application for hyloplate held over.. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT.— The Premier acknowledged receipt of letter of condolence in re the death, of the late Right Hon. R. J. Seddon. BREATHING EXERCISES.— The Education Department wrote 6tating that tbere was no vote out of which the salary of an instructor in breathing exercises couid be paid, and» that such salary would bo a fair charge on the Board's funds. WANGANUI TECHNICAL SCHOOL.— The Department notified a further grant nf £±7Q for addition* to tlie< Wanganui Technical Sfchool.

TOKORANGI.— The Department wrote with reference to the proposed new school at Tokorangi that it seemed a case for conveyance of children to Kakariki. — Recolved that the Chairman communicate with the Minister, pointing out the special circumstances of the case. ARARATA.— The Department notified a grant of A'l76 for teacher's residence at Arara'ta. CAMP.— A circular from Colonel Loveday with reference to a proposed camp of school cadets at the Christchurch Exhibition was held over. SCHOOL GARDENS.— Tho Feilding A. and P. Association wrote asking that permission be given to Mr J. Grant to judge the Association's school garden competition. — Mr Grant mote declining- to judge, ns it would practically be passing- a verdict on his own work. He offered certain suggestions in regard to the matter, which were adopted. SCHOLARSHIP.— Letter from H. G. Brodie re Junior National and Board's Scholarships held by him. As the Department objected to his retaining both, he asked which had the longer term to run, and which the Board would advise him to retain. — Left in the hands of the Chairman. W A VERLETY.— Application for a District High School held over. CHILDREN'S TEETH.— A. letter waa read from the Palmerston Dentists' Association re examination of children's teeth. — Resolved to thank the Association for the letter. TRUANCY— The Wanganni Educational. Institute wrote asking withdrawal of the ] circular removing the onus of prosecuting in cases of truancy from the Truant Inspector to the teachers. — Resolved to forward the lustitute the Board's reasons for its action. ■ MAORIS.— Mr J. Adams, of Hawera, wrote pointing out that the parents of a Maori child attending a Maori school were not proceeded against for truancy, but when attending a European school they were. This meant that their Barents got tired of being fined and took them away. H asked if there were no means of securine more favourable treatment of them. — Resolved to reply that the Board has to carry out the law. TE ROTI. — Mr J. Kemp resigned position of Commissioner.

• BEACONSFIELD.— Mr Sandilands appointed Commissioner, and to be asked to appoint another. BRUNSWICK.— Messrs E. Barrett and J. Roche appointed Commissioners. WARRENGATE.— In reference to tlis committee's application to lease a portion of the school ground, it was resolved to ask that a plau be forwarded. GLEN OROUA.— Resolved to apply to I the Government for two yeans' rent of the hall in which the school has been held. — Resolved to approve the application for a new school. LOWER MOAWHANGO.— Application for residence forward to the Government with request for a grant. TAlHAPE.— Application for f«no» round school par den. — Granted. TORERE.— .£IO granted for erection of woolshed. COAL CREEK.— £ for £ up to £9 granted for improving the grounds. BEACONSFIELD.— £7 granted for shelter shed. LONGBTfRN.— £I4 9s 6d granted for fencing. POHANGlNA.— Committee authorised to repair fireplace. WANGANUI DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL. — Blinds granted to replace old ones. SILVERHOPE.— £2 granted for repairing shelter shed. UMUTOL— Committee's estimate of fencing to be granted. * WAITOHL— HaIf cost of drainag* granted. RANGIWAHIA.— Committee to forward particulars of proposed fence. CHILIiTENHAM.— Teacher to report on condition of school furniture. — £7 granted ior wash-house. OTAKEHO.— Application to have school painted held over. NORMANBY.— Tank stand to be replaced. — Painting ot interior of school held over. OROUA BRIDGE.— Mr Fraser to report , on condition of residence. MANGAMAHU.— Application to be mads to tho Department for a grant for a residence. KAITOKE. — Committee's accounts for improvements to grounds passed for payment. lIUNTERVILLE.— ill (half cost)grantfor fencing. OKAIAWA. — New wnsh- house and repairs to fireplace authorised.
