POULTRY AND CAGE BIRD ASSOCIATION.

Third Annual Show.

The Wanganui Poultry, Pigeon and Cage Bird Association were not favoured with good weather for the opening day of their third annual show, but the attendance yesterday afternoon and evening may bs considered very satisfactory. As stated yesterday, the show is a really good one, the class of birds on exhibition being exceedingly good, though the number shows a falling off compared with last year. The general arrangements for the show were excellent, the only cause for complaint being that the committee had decided to do without catologues, and instituting in lieu thereof a card system. This idea cannot be said to have worked successfully, a., it gave rise to a deal of confusion, and made the task of judges, other officials, and pressmen much more difficult than iornierly — with the catologues. However, the trouble experienced yesterday in this connection could easily have been obviated had the cards contained the information as to which claes the bird» in the various pens belonged. It was, we understand, the intention of the hon. secretary (Mr W. Richinws), the originator of tins scheme, to have had the claca written <>v the cards, but circumstances intervened which prevented him having this done. Providing the system is again tried such information will be supplied on the cards. With this exception tho mauagemout was entitled to great praise, and the secretary and his fellow officials are to be complimented on the manner iv which they carried out their duties. In the poultry classes, competition wns particularly keen in Orpingtons, both buff and bluff, fie quality being fiistclase. The rrost successful exhibitors •were Mr G. R. Ilutchinson (AucVl.uid) and Mr F. Goivdacre' (New Plymouth). In Wyaudottcs Mr G. 11.. Hutch inson was also well to the fore, especially in tho gold "bad silver Wyamlottes. Captain Hood (New Plymouth) vm also very successful in the golden variety. In White Wyandottea Messrs Darv'l (Taihape) and Rendle (Dannevirkc) were the chief prize takers. Mrs Burgees and Mr Curry did best in Minorcas, while M(&>r.s Hutch inson and J. Jarviß were the principal exhibitors of Partridge Wyandotira, which class were exceedingly good. Mr J. T. Holland (Bunnythorpe) who took the first honors in White Leghorns, which were of a very high class. Mc-srs G. Townsend and R. W. Green (Wanganui) made good shows in this soctiou. Mr T. Frethy, of Wanganni, took the prize for Buff Leghorns, a new breed. Andafusians are a good class, Mr F. Goodacre being the meet successful exhibitor. This gentleman also exhibited a pair of Black Leghorns, a fine laying strain. The competition in Modern and Indian (Game is not nearly ao good as could l>e desired, though the bird belonging to Mr Peter Dtanks. of Granity Creek. West Coast, which carried off the special and gold medal was a very tine birdThe ducks shown are ot a very nigh class, superior to tlu*>e seen at many recent shows. The exhibition of poultry plucking ai. i dressing givrn by tin- Government expert (Mr Pounceford) "last night was most successful, and his skilful manner of handling the birds was watched with great interest. Tho plucking competition for novices attracted a lar^e number of entries, and was keenly contested. This event, which created a lot of interest was finally won by Mr B. Willis, after a dead heat with jir C. Bridges. n There was a great run on the cake, containing- gold and silver coins, which was sold at 6d per slice. There will bo plenty more on hand for to-night, a»d no doubt it also will meet with a ready sale. The following completes the prize list: — POULTRY. Wyand'ottes, goledn, cock. — Captain C. E.
