HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLE.

WELLINGTON, July 3.

The Department of Industries and Commorce has received tho following cable from the High Commissioner, dated London, Juno 3Oth:^ The mutton market is dull owing to the poor demand experienced. Light weights are extremely scarce, however. The average pri"e of Canterbury brands is 3 7-Bd, and North Island 3^d per lb. There ia bad sale for heavy weights. Canterbury brands of this description are quoted at'3|d, and North Island brandß 3Jd. There is a good demand for all descriptions of lamb, and the market consequently is firm. There is an endeavour amongst liolders to increase the price, and Canterbury brands aro selling at 5d and are quoted at 3|d, at 2 id, at :i\d, at 2sd, at 105s, at 64s at 60s. Other than Canterbury brands aro at 4Jd per lb. The beef market is very dull. Hindquarters are quoted at 3jd, and forequarters at 2|d. Chillevl River Plate hinds are selling at 3Jd, and £»res at 2Jd. The butter market is firm. New Zealand stocks are almost exhausted, and choicest New Zcaand brands are quoted at 105s per cwt; Danidli at 110s, and Canadian at 103s. The cheese market is firm. There is a good demand, which has been stimulated •by the canned meats scare. White makes are quoted at 645, and coloured at 60s per cwt. The hemp market is firm, and the demand is expected to increase. G.f.a.q. Wellington on spot is quoted at jJ33 per ton, and the same price applies to Oc-tober-December shipments. There is no alteration in the cocksfoot market since last week. The wool market is a share weaker. Current quotations for Bradford tops are 36s low croesbreds Is 6d lb, 40's do. do. Is 6|d, 44's medium do. Is Bd, 50's Ijalfbreds Is ]OJd, 56'fl quarterbreds 2s ljd, 60's merinos 2s 4d.
