The Conservative Split.

TO THE EDITOR.

Sir, — The Chronicle's leader of Ist inst. is calculated to defeat the object it had in view, and to do more harm than good to tho candidate for whom they evidently hold a brief. The Chronicle deplores the "split" in the Opposition votes, which will in all probability lose the seat : and yet who but the Chronicle split the votes in tho first place? Mr Haselden was out in the Opposition interest long before Mr Bassett announced himself, or had any idea of coming forward as a candidate; and as Mr Haseld'Cn fills all tho requirements need ad by a good live representative, as laid down by the Chronicle in the nbovo-mentiojied leader, why was Mr Ba?s?tt brought forward? Mr Haselden is all that can be desired as a representative^ — strong, true, fearless, capable, and of proved ability ; and a better man it would bo hard to find to represent us. Mr Basset t is no doubt a highly-respected citizen, but will he make a good member? From the manner in which he is trimming now, I think not. Mr Bassett's views on the Prohibition question are well known, and yet it is stated that his committee are soliciting votes from those representing the liquor trade. It is quite evident that the Chronicle does not care a fig for "party," but is fighting in the Prohibition interest only. "If" the statement made by the Chronicle, "that Mr Bassett had beon requested to stand by Mr Mass&y" be true, then he (Mr- Massey) has deliberately done his utmost to lose the seat, but I cannot believe this. If the Conservative Party desire to win the feat their only chance isto vote for Mr Haselden, who has the sympathy and esteem of all. true Conservatives. The Chronicle's action will ruin any chance Mr Bassett ever had. — I am, etc.,

ANTE-BUNKUM.
