THE LIBERAL SPLIT.
Retirement of Mr> T. B Williams
In response to a requisition signed by representatives of the Liberal Party, Mr 1. B. Williams lias consented to withdraw from the contest. In thus reducing the number of candidates and assisting in Party concentration Mr Williams must earn the gratitude of all true Liberals, who will not soon forget his loyalty to the Party and to Liberal principles. Following i 3 tho requisition and Mr Williams' reply : — Wanganui, November 30, 1905. T. B. Williams, Esq.. Wanganui. Dear Sir — At the present time the multiplicity of Liberal candidates is endangering the R^at to the Liberal side. Knowing as wo do that your candidature is not the outcome to any desire for your own personal advancement, but for the general good, and that you have the interests of Liberalism fully at heart, we feel confident that we can rely on you to make a personal sacrifice. You will admit that at present the elianeo of a Liberal candidate being returned is small, owing to so many standing on this side. Wo therefore respectfully ! suggest that you consider the advisability of withdrawing from the contest. By so | doing we feel sure that your action and motives will be fully appreciated by all those who desire to see the present administration continue, of which you have always been one of the strongest supporters, Wo are, Yours sincerely, A. G. BIGNELL. A. HATRICK. W. J. TREADWELL. G. S. GORDON. N. MEULI. SAYNOR GRIFFITHS. C. H. WALKER. • JAMES TAWSE. W. H. CLAPHAM. J. M. WELLS. G. CALMAN. J. H. KEESING. I. SALEK. F. M. SPUR.DLE. T. W. BLENNERHASSETT. C. L. DUIGAN. : J. H. BURNET. F. H. HATHERLY. R. RUSSELL. F. WEBB JONES. Wanganui, November 30, 1905. To the Electors. Ladies and Gentlemen, — In response to the above requisition, which I believe voices the feelings of a large number of the Liberal Party in Wanganui, viz., that unless the number of candidates standing in the Liberal interests is reduced, the scat will be lost, I have consented to retire from the contest. At the various conferences which have been held, I have been at all times willing to fall in with any reasonable proposal, but the others, I may say, have not done so. Recognising, therefore, the serious responsibility which rests upon all of us in this matter, I have decided to make, what is to me. a sacrifice, and I trust that my action and motives will meet with the approval and endorsement of all true Liberals. To those who have been working for me, I tender my sincere thanks. Yours faithfully, T. BOSWALL WILLIAMS. In consequence of his retirement, Mr Williams has cancelled his engagements to i address the electors, and will not speak at Aramoho this evening. - Owing to extreme pressure on our space -no correspondence, unless very brief, will have any chance of appearing in our columns iintil the General Elections are over. Tc-day being St. Andrew's Day, .the Courthouse, banks and a. number of Government offices observed a holiday. Captain Edwin telegraphs : — Strong winds to gale from between south-west and south, glass rise, tides high, sea heavy, rain probable, and weather colder. "If the three millions we spend annually in drink were saved to-morrow, -wages would fall and we would be no better off." — Mr O'Regan on thrift. The results to Saturday la6t of the local pens at the Blenheim Egg-laying Competition are as follows: — L. Peat 611, Townsend and Green 592, G. Silcock 585, T. Fret hey 482, and T. Frethey 460. The Rev. Thompson, in an address at Dunedin on temperance, said there were probably thirty sly-grog shops in Ashburton, and supposing each sold ten drinks a day, he estimated that 109,500 sly-grog drinks were sold in a year. In connection with the proposed presentation to Mrs Hoey, we have distributed a number of lists to business people, and others, and will be pleased to supply lists to anyone on application. The smallest contributions will be thankfully received.
