THE PALMERSTON SHOW.

First Day. (Per United Press Association.) PVLMERSTON N., November 1. The opening of Hie three days' saason of the- 20th Metropolitan of the Manav.'itu and Wfst Coast A. and P. Association took place unostentatiously to-day in glorious weather, which looks promising also for to-morrow. Palmerston's accommodation is already taxed to its xitmosty and thare is an unusually large number of people in town for the first clay. Judging began this morning in a few classes of horses, and in poultry, produce, and ait home industries this afternoon. It will-bo, a busy time for judges and a heavy one to-morrow. The display of machinery, implements, and vehicles to-day is one of thp. finest ever seen in the colony, coA'ering over an acre of ground.

The summer time-table of the Castlecliff Railway Company came into operation today. The directors of the Castlecliff Railway Company have appointed Mr George Collingwood ganger and foreman. At a largely attended meeting held last evening in the Baptist Church, a Young Women's No-License Club was formed. Intending exhibitors at the Wanganui Agricultural Association's Show are reminded that entries close on Saturday next, 4th inst. Spray your potatoes with Bordeaux mixture, and get your materials from Jas.> Laird and Sons, who have a full supply of the best Milestone, also lime or soda. Captain Edwin wired at noon to-day: — Strong winds to gaje from between noilh-cast and north and west; glass further fall; tides high; sea heavy; rain probable. A start was made yesterday with tha coach road to connect Ohakune with the Main Trunk Line at the viaduct at" Makatoki. This coach line will be a connecting link pending the completion of this bi_viaduct. In collection with the railway deviation between the Cemetery and the Gaol, through Hatrick Street and tho Industrial School property, the work of constructing a bridge or culvert sufficiently strong to carry the railway traffic over Churton's Creek on Taupo Quay has bean commenced by the Railway Department. Mr Cobbe, travelling representative for the well-known Bonnington patent medicines and preparations, is at present, in town in connection with tiie firm's business, lie has been distributing a useful little pamphlet on "Profitable Poultry Farming/ copies of which may be obtained gratis from the local chemists and business people. Mr Cobbe leaves on his Taranaki tour to-morrow. The following wire from the Premier was received yesterday by the secretary of the Education Board: —"The Teachers' Superannuation Bill and the Education Act Amendment Bill have received the assent of his DDxcellency, and are now the law of the land. I am relieved of much anxiety, and am glad at heart at having been able to do justice to the teachers of our colony." The Maori shelter shed on Taupo Quay was offered by public auction this afternoon by Mr J. H. Keesing, and was knocked down to Mr N. P. Manson, of Kai Iwi for .£B2. We hear that Mr Man-. son bought the building on behalf of the settlers at Kai Iwi, who intend re-erecting it as a public hall. The speed of horse vehicles and motor cars was discussed at the Boroxigh Council last evening, more especially the rate at which they travelled at such times as race and show days, one councillor remarking that the pace at which many vehicles dashed round corners at such times would some day result in a serious accident. It was resolved to draw the attention of the police to the matter. The next meeting of flic Young Men's No-licenso Clul) will be held in Mr Duatin's refreshment'- rooms, Victoria Avenue at 8 p~m. on Thursday nt-xt. In addition to tho usual business, refreshment will be provided at the small cosVtif 6d per member. Certain young meft have been allotted subjects dealing wilh the various aspects of No-license to epeak on, while a few musical items are being arranged for. Every member who can do so is asked to make a point of attending. At last night's meeting of the Borough Council, Cr Green drew attention to tho fact that Invercargill, a town of no more importance than Wanganni, had received two offers for the construction of a tramway service, with that the work would be completed within eighteen months. There had, he said, been many inquiries in Wanganui as to when tramways would be seen here, and he hoped, soon to see thorn an accomplished fact. The Majov said he was-convinced of the inadvisabilitv of giving a private company the monopoly of such a service, if it were at all possible for the Council to undertake it. There was, however, no need to bo in a hurry, and if they saw what was being done in Invercargill they would be able to profit by that town's experience. With reference to the paragraph published- in our contemporary this ffiorning, stating that the fact that 290 circulars sent out TiV Mr W. G. Bassett having been returned owing to the addressees not being discoverable in Wanganui "brovea that the Wanganui electoral roll is by n|j means perfect, we learn that Mr W. Trimble, the Registrar of Electors, had over 150 notices h» eaua^d to be sent out to electors when preparing the roll returned to h\m for the same reason. From this it is evident either that a very \ntgc number of people in Wangranui are continually changing their., addresses, or else that a d.eal of carelessness is shown by nome who make application to be flaced on the roll in not forwarding their correct address. It is certainly no fault of th© Registrar that such a state of things should exist, and he is to be commended for taking the sensible course of retaining ;ho names on the roll rather than disfranchising electors who of necessity" have been ocmpelled to change their addresses or who may Tbe working in the outskirts of the district and are temporarily absent from town.
