THE GENERAL ELECTIONS.
Mr Remington, at Huntorville. { (Special to Hbbat.d. — By Telegraph.) HUNTEEVILLE, October 1. Mr Ecmington delivered his inaugural address at Hunterville last night, when the attendance was good. He spoke exhaustively and satisfactorily on the much debated land question, and the various scandals I-ovelled at the Government, out of which, as it did with the "voucher incident," it had come scathless. Ho referred to the present position of the Bank of New Zealand, and its ability to assist settlers. Thanks to the Seddon Government, the investment now returns a dividend of ,£25,000. He showed how the Opposition, though crying on the platform its nccesiity for success, fully blocked Sir William Steward's Bill for Legislative Council reform, •and illustrated the tactics displayed on the Imprest Supply. He dealt with the financial position, and showed there was a savi ing of .£143,000 annually by the transference of nearly 4£ millions surplus to the Public Works Fund. The charges of favouritism in advertising were letuted. Allusions to Old Age Pensions, Maori Land Settlement, the Education Act, Teachers' Superannuation, thj Sliofii and Offices Bill, closed a highly satisfactory address. Several questions wore answered satisfactorily, and a vote of thanks and confidence was carried with cheers.
