THE RANFURLY SHIELD.
AUCKLAND (10) v. WELLINGTON (6). (Per United Prtsa Association.) WELLINGTON, August 26. "Wellington managed to lose the Kanfurly Shield to Auckland to-day by 10 to 6. They -were playing a team drawn from the local Union only, and sadly missed their country brethren behind the scrimmage. Their rearguard was pitifully weak, and their exhibition sent cold shivers down the backs of the spectators. The forwards were nearly the same as those who have done so well in recent matches, but they had all their work cut out to keep the Auckland forwards in check, and what they ,won their backs carefully lost. In the first spell Auckland, playing with the wind, scored a try and a goal from a mark. The! former was effected by Todd and Wynyard, and the latter by Francis. Playing with the wind, Wellington did worse than before, for, though they secured six points from penalty goals, Tyler crossed their line again, making Auckland 10 to 6, and generally they were outplayed by the visitors 1 . The latters' backs were a good lot, and their safety and smartness offered a sharp contrast to the fumbling and indecision of Wellington's rear men. The forwards also played with dash and combination, and . more than held their own against the strong vanguard opposed to them. The day, which had been showpry and threatening, cleared up, the sun came out, and some six thousand spectators were present.
