Lovely weather prevailed for the Eg-mont-Wanganui Hunt Club's animal race meeting, which was hold to-day on the Racecourse. The attendance was satisfactory, and the gathering was a most successful and enjoyable one. The officials of the club, and especially the lion, secretary (Mr Frank Moffatt) are to be congratulated on the excellence of the arraucements, the various events being got off punctually to time and without a hitch of any kind. Considerable interest was tuken in the racing, the jumping events being particularly exciting, and some cxccUont "lopping" was witnessed. Speculation was ncr medium of the "bookies." a large number of whom were in attendance, and appeared to do a deal of business. Mr Peter Hartshorn, who had the publican's booth, was well patrouised, and save every satisfaction to his numerous customers. Mr* Hartshorn also supplied the lunch for the officials, aifd the menu was a capit-.il one and reflected great credit on the caterer. Results: — LICENSED VICTUALLERS' STEEPLECHASE, trophy valued 25 soys for winner, and 5 soys to second horse;

Haerekama led over the first jump, after which Rapanui went to the front, and led throughout. Cairo was in close attendance in the early stages of the race, and passing the stand the second time ran up to Ra.panui, but took the wrong course, and thus lo3t all chance. Jackaroo also lost a lot of ground through his rider following Cairo. This left Rapanui with a big lead, with Haerekama second, Scnorita having fallen at the back of the course. Rapanui had increased his lead to twenty lengths as they came out of the Recreation Ground, and was eased ujj, with the resiilt that Jackaroo, who came very fast at the finish, got up to within a length at the post, with Haerekama half a length further away. When the- barrier went up Sedgemoor shot to the front, followed by Land o' Cakes. Tautoru losing several lengths, and Mereshot also moving slowly. Sedgemoor entered the straight with a couple of lengths' lead, and though Land o' Cakes made a big effort .he could not make much impression on ttie leader, on whom Jenkins had a comfortable ride, passing the post with a length and a half's advantage, Clairmont being a length further away. Betting — Evens Cairo, 5 to 2 Jonquil, 4 to 1 Old Gun, and 3 to 1 the winner. Jonquil led at the start, followed by Cairo. This order was maintained until the water jump wa9- reached, where Cairo fell on his knees, and lost a dozen lengths, Jonquil led out and. through the Recreation Ground, with Rapanui close up. As they passed the stand again Jonquil and Rapanui were together with Cairo — who had made up a lot of his lost ground in good styk — third. Jonquil drew away at the 7jack of the course, where Cairo spoilt an excellent chance of winning 1 by falling. Jonquil looked like having it alljiis own way until the bend for home, where Rapanui and Old Gun closed up, and the three horses took the hencoop together.. A really good finish resulted in Rapanui winning by half a length, with- Old Gun a similar distance away, third. Time, 6min 50 1-5 sec. HUNTERS' HANDICAP HURDLE ' RACE, of 15 soys; 1* miles. Dr. W. A capital start saw Flanagan and Stampede go to the front, and lead past the stand. AC the six-furlong post Stampede dropped back, and Betty ran up to the leader, while Tattoo- also improved his position. Flanagan and Betty were racing together as they entered the straight, biit the top-weight draw away aarain, and landed over the last hurdle with a good lead, eventually winning by three or four lengths.
