SUBURBS LIGHTING BILL.

■ A meeting of tho Mataongaonga Road Board was 'held at noon on Saturday to consider the position in reference to ■ the above Bill. All the members were .present, and Mr Neilson occupied the chair. It was stated fthat the Bill was to be ieferred to the^ Local Bills Committee on Tuesday morning. Mr Mackey moved and Mr Jones seconded a motion that the two gentlemen named should proceed to Wellington to , represent the Board on the matter. Mr Neilson moved as an amendment that Mr Rice's name be added. Mr Rice declined. " " : - Mr Millward moved that Mr Neilson's -name be aded. Seconded by Mr Rice. Mr Mackey said that the Bill was being " promoted by the Board. It eeemed to him absurd to suggest that the Board should send, as their representative at the expense of the Board, a- gentleman who was known tp be opposed to the Bill. If Mr Neilson chose to go down and oppose the ' Bill as a private ratepayer, that was quite another matter. jfr Jones agreed that Mr Millward'* proposal was ridiculous. He went on to' protest against what he termed the unfair and underhand tactics of the opponents, of the Bill. The grossest and most undeserved imputations of personal and interested motives were being made against those who supported the Bill. . The Chairman: Do you -mean those remarks to apply to any member of the Board? Mr Jones: These tactics would not be resorted to if it were not for ■ the encouragement given by certain members of the Board." Mr Mackey pointed* out that* Mr Rice and the Long Acre people had withdrawn their opposition ' to the Bill. Mr Millward's amendment was then put, and lost on the casting vote of the chairman. • . • • Mr Mackey's motion was tHen carried, the chairman voting- against it." Mr Neilson announced that lie waa goino- to Wellington personally orer "the Bill. •
