SYDNEY. June 27, 'At the Lauds Commission counsel for Willis submitted that it was not fair to inquire into matters wherein Willis's Esae appeared until the fase whereon Willis was arrested had been dealt with, as it might prejudice the public against him. Mr Justice Owen «u<3 that as far as that case was concerned, the matter had not been gone into, but with respect to Btaying the -inquiry into the other cases, ho saw no reason to do so at present.
Mr Carruthers re-affirmod that he knew nothing of any cases which involved an inquiry wherein his^ firm had acted. lie added that in order to avoid tlus possibility of _hig association with matteis of any public character in his legal postion. ha had decided to retire fronx the practice of his .profession for at least two years, and longer if he should have the raisforfue to- continue in office. Owing to his duties as : >Premier, he had no time to attend to priyate business. He had got his name and fortune involved in matters over which he had no control. ' In the Assembly Mr carruthers, in reSly to a series of questions, informed the [onse that the Government was introducing a bill to give the Lands Commissioner power analagous to that of a Supreme Coiirt Judge for ensuring the attendance of witnesses.
