BOROUGH COUNCIL

The usual fortnightly meeting of the above was held last evening. Present — His .Worship the Major, (Mr A. G. Bignell, in the chair), and Crs. E. N. Liffiton, H. T. Johns, T. B." Williams, H. Purser, G. Caiman, G. S. Bridge, R. W. Green, TH Battle and P. Bell. MINUTES. T-The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. HOCKEY ASSOCIATION.— The Waaganui Hockey Association wrote asking the Council to reconsider their request for permission to use part of Queen's Park for hockey. — After ( a /brief discussion, during which the opinion was expressed that the portion of Queen's Park referred to should be reserved for the benefit of the children, the matter was referred to the Reserves Committee to report at next meeting. •BLACKSMITHING.— Mr W. Minchinton wrote informing the Council that he had sold out his business tq Mr A. Jones, and asking that the contract for blacksmithing work held by him should be transferred to Mr Jones. — Referred to th« Works -Committee. GABRISON BAND.— A letter from the secretary of the Garrison Band re a subsidy -to the Band was referred to the Finance Committee. SANITARY INSPECTION. — A communication was received from the District Hejalth Officer stating that Mr Sarjeant had bee» appointed Sanitary Inspector in Wanganui. TIMARU BOROUGH COUNCIL.— The 'Timaru Borough Council wrote asking the ' Council's co-operation in procuring legislation re discharging sewage into the sea. — It was decided to reply that the matter was one for the Municipal Conference to deal with. TRANSFER.— The transfer of a lease from H. J. "Turner to Geo. Sigley was agreed to. PETITION. — A petition was read from a number of residents and owners in Liverpool Street Extension asking the Council to erect a lamp and remove the weeds and vegetation growing on the strset and footpaths. — The question of the lamp was referred to th* Gas Committee, and it was decided to clear the weeds at once. LIGHTING COMMITTEE.— The Lighting Committee reported as follows: Your Committee met on the 6th inßt., when there were present: The Mayor and Crs. Bell, Bridge, Liifiton, and Williams. We nad under consideration a letter from three residents on the Main Western road, St. John's Hill, asking that gas mains be extended for the supply of gas to their respective premises. We had before us a report of the gas engineer thereon. The estimated cost of that portion of the pipe track ouetide the borough limits is £104. The estimated, cost of the waoiej .£l6O. We recommend that the applicants be informed that if they are f Willing to bear the annual interest and sinking fund at the rate of 8 per cent, on the -first cost of the work and any legal costs connected therewith, the work will be carried out. — Adopted. SANITATION COMMITTEE— The Sanitation Committee's report was read and adopted. FINANCE COMMITTEE.— The Finance Committee's report was read and adopted. CAB FARES. — A letter was read' from the Inspector of Vehicles pointing out that it was impossible to carry out the Council's instructions re the posting of scale of fares in cabs. — It was decided to refer the report back to the Inspector, and request him to suggest a method of attaching the scale of fares to vehicles in a prominent place. NOTICE OF MOTION.— Cr. Bridge gave notice to move that the bye-laws be revised and that a committee consisting of Crs. Battle, Bridge, Johns, and Caiman have power to invite those interested to confer with them on the various sections. RATE.— It was resolved that the general rate for the current year be Is 6d in the pound, and that the special rate be 8d in the pound. LAMPS. — The question of erecting a lamp at the upper end of Wicksteed Street and another on the St. John's zigzaef was referred to the Gas Committee. MENACE TO HEALTH.— Cr. Johns said it had been brought under his notice that a quantity of water was usually lying in Bell Street between Plymouth and Dublin Street, and that it was thought that this water caused a certain amount of sickness. — It was> decided that the Foreman of Works report on the matter. • The Council then adjourned.
