PORT AHURIRI (3) v. PIRATES (13).
On Saturday afternoon the Port Ahuriri team played a match on' the Recreatidn Ground against fifteen representing the Pirate Club. The weather was favourable and there was a fair attendance to witness the game, which was a very interesting one. Considering that the season had only just opened come very decent form was shown on both sides. In tho first spell the Pirates had the visitors on the defensive most of the time, and scored six points to nil, Mitchell and Holland securing tries. The Ahuriris livened up a bit after changing ends, and after some fifteen minutes' play Craig scored a try as the outcome of a good dribbling rush. The game at this stage became more open and faster than it had previously been, the local boys getting on some very creditable passing rushc« which looked dangerous, but the greens managed to stave off their opponents very well, until at length Holland, broke through and notched another try for the blacks. The kick at goal was again a failure. The visitors tried hard to equalise, matters, but without avail, the blacks continuing to. attack strongly. A few minutes before the call of time, -Teko potted a neat goal, and the game eventually ended with the score — Pirates 13, Ahuriris 3.
Mr Geo. Brown refereed in a most satisfactory manner. The visitors were entertained at a dinner and smoke concert at the Newmarket Hotel on Saturday evening, the function being most successful in every way.
