Though the weather looked very threatening about noon to-day, the wind fortutaatefy drove the clouds away, and the weather was .beautiful when the athletic idld CTclinp- S2>"rte in connection with the Christmas Carnival eojM»isnoed this aft^r•noon on Cook's Gardens. The wind died away, 'and the times recorded . iv both cycling and running events were exceptionally fast. The tracks— both the grass a.ud cycle — were in good condition, and as ,tl>e Jfiolds \vuro big in fnosfc of th-? events the sport provided was very interesting 1 to the ppertators.. of whom there was a large number preosnfc. The officials all carried out theii' several duties in capital stylo, and kept things going merrily, thus adding greatly to the general enjoyment. Altogether ih« function was a most successful on?. ,Tho Garrison Band were in attendance, and rendered a choice selection of music, which was much appreciated by the spectators. The following were the results up to the hour of going to press: — Sheffiield Haindicap, 120 yards.— First Heat.— J". W. Watters, 9 yds,. 1; L. Marter, 10 yds, 2. Also started: Y/. Farrijly, S.J yds. Won by a yard somewhat easily. Time. 11 3-orcc. Second- Haat. — P. Smyth, 10 yds, 1; C. Williams, 5£ ydi. 2. Also ."tartcd: P." JR. Amn«r.j 0 yde. _Won by half a yard. T;iine, 11 4-534 C. The field closed up gradually, and 30 yards frofii home it was anybody's race, but Smyth managed to squeeze home by about half a yard, with Jones a, similar distance away, third. Time. 11 l-ssec.
One Mile Cycle Handicap.— First Heat. —A. H. Coe, 90 yds, 1; W. Tete, 110 yds,' 2. Also started : S. Barrow, scratch ; J. Stevens, scratch; W. Draffin, 50 yds; G. V. Dunn, 60 yds;! J. Jenkins, 90 yds; A. 'Cuff, 90 yds. Won by 50 yards, Barrow being close -up to the second man., Time, 2niia 15sec. Second Heat. — G. Barry, 70 yds, 1 ; W. Cameron, 10 yds, 2. Also started : M. Brunette scratch, H. Lloyd 50 yds G. Bradley 60 yds, F. Anderson 80 yds! W. G. GuthriG 90 yds, F. G. Wan 90 yds, and K. E. Vincent 90 yds. A fine i tac6, the field presenting a pretty sight. 1 Won by a length, a close finish between the others. Time, 2min 18secs. Third Heat —A.- Huston ech., 1 : ~S?. .Tierney, 20yds, 2; J. E. Marshall, 70yds, 3. E. Cran^p, A. L. Loveridefe, W. Greenlees, J. Murphy, and W. E. Dymond 90yds each, also started. Won nicely j^by two lengths. Time, 2min 20secs. Final— A. H. Coe 1, J. M. Marshall ,% G..B,?irry 3. The winner and Tete made the',, pace at first and never gave the back mark men a chance. Barry took the lead" a? s the bell rang, but he was elcsely followed by Coe, who hung on to the header's whee} -until the bottom of the straight, where/ t £oe spurted, and riding in fine style, passed Barry and won by three lengths from Marshall, who just beat Barry for second place. Coe's win was a popular one. >Time, 2min 18 2-ssec. Obstacle Race.— Evan*. 1, Harvey 2, R. O. Jarrett 3. Only stauters. The obstacles comprised a netting 9ft high, which had to be climbed over,- barrels, hurdles, a sheet and a spar. 12 inches high, which had to be .crawled under, finishing- in sacks. • Needless, to say thjt3 was a vary amusing race.., ' , , " Halfrinile Cycle.— First Heat— H. Brunette, sch., 1 ; J. Stevens, sell., 2 ; W. Greenlees, 50 yds, $\ Also started— G. Garry 30 yds, J. Goodin -15 yds, W. Tote, 60 yds. Won by two lengths. Time, lmin 4 2-sscc. Third Heat— A. H. Co©, 50 yds, 1; Gr. Bradley, 35 yds, 2 : ». Barrow, sch., 3. Also started — W. Cameron 35 yds, H. Graham, 50 yds^. Good finish, won by a wheel. Time, lnnn ssec. Fourth Heat— W. G. Final. — G. Bradley 1, W. Tierney and M. Brunette dead heat for second place. From a capital start, Gufchrie led the field at a merry pace for -the first round with Coe. second. 220 yrfrds from homo the back men closed up rapid- . ly; and coming into the straight they were all bunched. At this stag© Bradley shot to the front with a I\no sprint,- and maintaining his effort, /eventually won by over a length from Tierney and Brunette, who jhikhed dead level; the judges being unable to separate .them* Time, lmin 3 3-5, sec. i Half Mile Flat.— A. Arnott, 40yds, 1 ; J. W. Wattqrs, 45yds/ ,2; W. S. Howell, 45yae, 3. Also started— A. N. Morey 30, C. Wilson 45, D. W. Reid 50,, F. Bellshaw 50, W. Harvey 50, F.'Fagan 50; W. Summerill 55yds, D. Greenlees 55. D. Malhicson 55, and D. Ross. 55. -D. Greenlees made the pace at the start, but Wat tors was soon up with uie\ leaders, and after going half the distance took the lead, with Ilowell . and Arnott close up. Wat tors drew awtoy down the back stretch with a load of five or six yards, but '2so yards from home Arwott spurted splendidly and gradually closed up to . the leader. Twenty yards from home Arnott got up to Watters and aftor a good race wron, by a couple of yards, with Howell close up third, and Morey next. Time, lmin 58" l-sseo.
