THE HON. HUIA ONSLOW.

WELINGTON, December 28.
In the year 1891 the Hon. Huia Onslow, son of the Earl of Onslow, then Governor of New Zealand, was inducted as chieftain, of the Ngatihuia tribe at Otaki. Th« child was then about a year old. Last • week Lady Onslow returned on a visit to th« colony, bringing Huia with her; and today the lad was ' welcomed by a great gathering of the Ngatihuias' and Ngatiraukawas at OtaKi. Tnere' were a great many visitors present; among them being Mr Seddon an<l Sir J. G. Ward. Th» Countess of Qnslo'w and her bohtow m«t on arrival by' a" number oif prominent natives, and driven to "the meeting-hous». Along the road bands of Maoris Bang songs of welcome-" At ' the meeting-honflß an address ,of welcome was presented to Huia, expresive of the Maoria' pleaiux* at his return. He, and 'his sister, Lady Dorothy, were also presented with valuatil* mats. The tribal forum in front of the nieeting-house had been, gravelled and turfed, and planted with nikau palma and tree ferns until it was a minature park. The front was a. /bower of nikau froridi. Prom the tall flagstaff floated the tribal ensign — the gift of Lord Onslow to th« Ngatihnias. • -■ After the preliminary welcome, th» guests were entertained at lunch by thf Maoris, whbse hospitality, was of th« »ost lavish character. ..
