Those who attended the Feilding Races yesterday had anything but a pleasant time of it, unless they were fortunate enough to get on to any of the big' dividends which were the order of the day. The rain fell in torrents for about a quarter of an hour before the start of -the first lace, and this;, with other heavy showers, had the effect of ;r, aiding \ tho lawn and paddock a • regular qua%niire, whilst the course became fetlock rlocp in mud. Just prior to the start of the big hurdle race a thunderstorm broke over the place, the rain coming down in sheets, accompanied by thunder and several flashes of forked lightning. Immediately after the conclusion of the last event another tropical downpour was experienced, whilst the wind blew with tremendous force, to the discomfiture' of thoso who had to brave the elements in order to catch the trains. Notwithstanding the adverse meteorological conditions, there was a very good attendance, and speculation was exceedingly brisk, the investments for the day totalling .£llOO more than on the corresponding day last year.
