A STRANGE PHENOMENON.

A peculiar phenomenon, which has aroused much speculation,, occurred last week at. the Eagle Point village settlement. Two men who were sinking an artesian bore on a strip of low-lying land between the Mitchell River and Eagle Bay, felt the drill grating on something, and hauled it out. .As they did so they heard a roaring noise at the bottom of the ore, which was 50ft deep, followed by a series of small" explosions. A long tongue of flame escaped from the end of the ore, pipe into the air, and continued to burn fiercely/ the combustion accompanied by a hollow roaring sound. TJid fire filled the well, burning the hardwood! boards with which it was covered. After blazing four hours without a break, the fire suddenly subsided, and went out. For some time after -a hissing noise could be heard in the bore. Profesor Gregory attribu, tes the occurrence to vegetable gases.
