WAVERLEY NOTES.

At a meeting of -the Waitotara Mounted Infantry on Saturday evening last Lieut. W. J. Davis was unanimously elected captain of the corps, vice Captain Howie, resigned. Captain Howie, though not actively connected with the corps, still retains a lively interest in volunteering, and the members of 'the Wairoas will always remember their capabe leader. Lieuts. Klingender and Parkes are, of course, promoted to first and second lieutenancy, whilst Sergt.-Major Watkins was chosen for the third vacancy. The first rifle competition for Wairoa M.I. trophies is taking place to-day. The corps is famed for "hot" shots, though it has lost two worthy representatives in Captain Howie and Sergt. Thorpe. Mr J. W. Emmerson, land and commission agent, Waverley, reports haying disposed of Mr Frere's lease, comprising 677 acres, to Mr E. Bourke; , Mr Gleeson's lease of 108 acres, to Miss E. Ileid; and 2i acres in the Waverley township to Messrs-Badde-ley and Forlong, to erect sale yards thereon.

A meeting of the Waverley Sporta Association was held on Saturday night last, when the aribual balance-sheet showed a very healthy state, so far as finances were concerned. It is intended to increase the programme for next meeting considerably. Mr J. Muir, of Waverley, who is a poultry enthusiast, had the misfortune to lose a number of his purebred birds lately through a dog, or dogs, getting into the pens and slaughtering right and left. There is a bad time in store for somebody's canines if they can only be discovered. At Messrg Jackson and Co.'s sale yesterday very little stock' changed hands under the hammer, sheep being totally neglected. A considerable quantity, however, changed hands after the sale.

Bowling is in full swing in Waverley* In fact, it supersedes every other form of recreation in that town, and it must be said that the club is developing -many "rracks" of whom' more will be heard later. The president (Mr D. Taylor) is arranging for a full rink to visit Rotorua on the occasipn of the big meeting' to be held there on 27th and 28th February.

'A providential escape is recorded from Moinohaki. It appears that a number of men" engaged at Verry's gravel pit had pitched their camp close to a face. On Thursday evening they happened to be absent from the camp for a short time, and when they returned they found their temporary home completely covered with a big fall of earth, some hundreds of tons.. In addition to their belongings, some 40 bags of oats and stores of different kinds are so completely buried that it is questionable if it will pay to dig them out. If the men had happened to be in camp the result would have been, obvious. „MivE.' P.B lake, of Waverley, has lately installed an up-to-date chees© plant on his farm, and is now turning out about threequarters of a ton of cheese a week. Mr Blake finds an ample colonial demand for his cheese, , which is said to be of excellent quality. At present Mr Blake is milking aliout 100 cows. . WAVERLEY TOWN HALL. Some little time ago the ladies of Wayerley,- recognising the need for a new floor for dancing purposes in the town Hall, arranged a social to raise .the necessary funds. Thanks to the energy of the ladies interested, and' the support of the public, the social was a great success, the net result being .£47 6s 6d. v Yesterday the directors of the Company met 'at the Commercial Hotel, when there were present—^Messrs J. B. Taylor (chairman), Nicholson, Howie, Jonnston and Brewer. .'.''.■; . \ t The secretary Wade) reported the result/ of thei racial and the purpose for which- the money was obtained. ' „ It was decided, on the- motion of Mr Johnston, seconded by Mr Brewer, that the chairman and Mr Wade order the timber and arrange with Mr Macfarlano for laying the floor.

It was resolved to direct the secretary to write to the ladies thanking them heartily for their subscriptions, and that v the directors will endeavour to carry out their wishes in regard to laying the new floor. During the meeting accounts amounting to £5 5s 4d pere passed for payment, leaving a dr. balance of .£2l 7s Bd.

OKOTUKU DOMAIN BOARD. The Board met at Waverley yesterday. Present — Messrs Thurston (chairman), W. Wilson, Hawes and McDonald.

Treasurer's balance of .£22 16s 4d was reported. A letter was received from Mr Gleeson re transfer of lease of racecourse reserve to Miss E.,Reid. It was resolved to grant the request, subject to certain conditions. Miss E. Reid wrote on the same subject.
