WANGANUI SAILING CLUB.

The sailing race for Mr J. G. Swan's gold medal and for points in connection with the cup presented by Mr R. Yarrow, which was started yesterday, ended in a fiasco. There was a strong breeze when the boats started on their trip, but this gradually faded, and..hpfore half the course had been covered it was apparent that there was no chance of the boats getting home within the three hours which it was stated was the time limit fixed. As we mentioned yesterday, the Iris took the lead almost from pistol fire, and continued to gain all the time, with the result that she rounded the lower buoy and got back to the bridge and near the cattle wharf again before the second boat made the lower buoy. From this out it was only a question as to whether tlic Iris fcould do the distance within the time limit, but the wind kept falling, and the result was that it was just an hour after the fixed time of finishing before she managed to reach the end of the course. The Wave continued the chase, and finished BOine twenty minutes later.

In the evening a special general meeting of the club was held at the Metropolitan B:otel,'Mr All". Mitchell presiding. A sub-committee, consisting of Messrs Johnsou, Brown" and .Hodgson, was appointed to write vp v the rules, and the annual general meeting was fixed for the second week in August. After a good deal of discussion over yesterday's race, it was decided to declare it, null and void, and it was ordered to be resailcd on Thursday next, the same rules and time limit to be observed.

A committee was appointed to wait upon the Harbour Board with regard to a site for a landing stage and shed, and ask permission to build.

It was resolved that an annual championship sailing race be held, and that there be three substantial money prizes, the race to be opeu to members of the Wanganui Sailing Club only.
